NWBL Round 6 Results

Friday's game against the Be Active Perth Wheelcats, saw the Shellharbour City Stadium full of anticipation and excitement, ahead of the top of the ladder clash between the Wollongong Roller Hawks and the Perth Wheelcats, and with the minor premiership up for grabs, it was shaping up to be the game of the season. A game that saw the Wollongong Roller Hawks defeat the 5 times NWBL Champions at home for the second year in a row!


Perth, with the help of Australian Rollers Captain Brad Ness, was in great form heading over to Wollongong with a 7-0 undefeated record for the 2011 season. The game was dubbed as the championship replay which started off with all guns blazing with the Wheelcats Taking the first quarter 25-20, neither team disappointed as they had the crowd on the edge of their seats for the entire first half as they traded baskets. Perth found it hard to contain the big combination of Knowles, Stibners and Russell whilst Wollongong had difficulties trying to slow Perth’s big man, Brad Ness. The teams went into the major break all tied up at 46 - 46.

The third quarter proved to be the game winner for the home team as the Roller Hawks regrouped and its full court press started to pay dividends. The Roller Hawks went into the final break with a 13 point lead. They did not slow down in the last pulling away to eventually win 109 - 90.

 

 

NWBL Round 5 Results

Round 5 of the NWBL saw the Wollongong Roller Hawks take on the Dandenong Rangers, battle of 2nd v 3rd on the competition ladder.
So far the Wollongong Roller Hawks are (5-1) for the 2011 season and with the return to full fitness of Paralympian Brett Stibners saw a full strength Roller Hawks team get ready for this clash.
Game 1: Saw Dandenong play good defense and with Dlyan Alcott with his radar on target, saw him hit 2 three point shots in the First quarter.
But Roller Hawks coach Ben Osborne rallied the troops to win every quarter and the game.Final score 101-64. With Tristan Knowles and Brett Stibners top scoring with 31pts followed by Shawn Russell Swith 21pts.

Game 2: Saw the Wollongong Roller Hawks pick up where they left off from Game 1. Working the offense and defense well, Coach Ben Osborne used his core teams experience to it's full capacity.
A half way shot from Tristan Knowles to seal the first half of play was the highlight of the game.
Second half of the game saw the bench players used more frequently and everyone played a vital role in the
95-78 win.

 

NWBL Round 3 Results

A strong performance was needed to defeat the Razorbacks last Sunday (10/7/11) at Menai Sports Staduim.

The Roller Hawks held up with with a good offensive performance, although continually being tested in defense and held a slender lead at end of the 1st quater (25-19) & half time (55-53). 3rd quater was till very tight with the Razor Backs edging ahead to a 1 point lead (79-80). The final quater saw both teams pulling no punches in a tug of war battle and keeping everyone at the stadium on edge to the very last seconds! (107-106)

A great effort by all team members in a tightly contested match!

NWBL Round 2 Results

A warm Sunday sun (26/6/11) escorted the Roller Hawks for the short road trip to the University of Sydney for a face off with the Wheel Kings. Victory to the Roller Hawks 103 - 55 at full time.

A determined squad headed by coach Ben Osborne put on a show not to dissapoint! A great game by all players both defensivly and offensivly headed by top scorer Shawn Russel (45) the troops rallied with a strong defensive line the entire game and never really showed any signs cracking. Strong scoring also by Tristan Knowles (26) and Luke Pople (14), with Shawn Russel rebounding (21) for the game and (11) assists for Tristan Knowles.

It was good to see Brett (Sticky) Stibners, although still sidelined through injury, at the game. We wish you a speedy recovery!

The next gane will be in 2 weeks (away) against the West Sydney Razorbacks.

 

NWBL Round 1 Results

The Wollongong Roller Hawks have returned from their long road trip to Adelaide and perth in the first round of the national wheelchair basketball league.

Round 1 - Double header away weekend, Adelaide-Perth
Fridays game was in Adelaide, a depleted Roller Hawks squad (without senior player/Aussie representative player Brett Stibners played well under instructions from new head coach Ben Osborne. Final score was 99-57. Players that starred were Tristan Knowles 39pts, 20 assists, 15 rebound triple double for the game, followed by Shawn Russell 31 pt,   13 rebounds. Eino Okkonen with 12pts, 8 rebounds.
All players played well
 
Saturday nights game was a grand final replay of 2010. The Perth Wheelcats had a full roster at full strength. With the home crowd behind them Perth started strong but lead at every quarter to win the game 100-81. Tristan Knowles again top scored with 44pts 7 assists 8 rebounds followed by Shawn Russell 22pts and 9 rebounds.
A hard fought game with times scores blowing out to 14 points and with Ben osborne's experience the roller hawks pulled it back to 2 points.
